Observatory
THE OBSERVATORY
Ipàzia, the Scientific Observatory on Gender Research, represents the importance of the expression of thought. To us, gender studies are not only a woman’s business. Indeed, they delineate the differences and synergies between men and women.
Not many women have had the chance to distinguish themselves in science (and, unfortunately, not only in science). Science itself was considered, until not a long ago, the exclusive prerogative of men.
Ipàzia was an ancient Greek mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, who lived in Alexandria in Egypt between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century.
She became a symbol of the expression of scientific thought, being killed by Christians. She later became a “martyr to freedom of thought”.
The freedom of scientific thought has been the primary motivation that led to the foundation of Ipàzia observatory.
